The first batch of Ugandan oil imports close to the port of Mombasa, ending Kenya is monopoly.

Two fleets carrying Uganda's first direct-imported cargo of petroleum products are due to be docked at the port of Mombasa next week, ending the monopoly long enjoyed by Kenyan oil marketers.

The import is part of a deal negotiated between Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) and Vitol Bahrain, which aims to reduce pump prices below the current rates offered by sellers in Kenya.

The two fleets will be tractored in Mombasa on July 2, said Unoc corporate affairs manager Tony Utwa.

Uganda expects the first fleet to arrive with 70,000 tons of cargo and this will continue to ensure stability in fuel supply to the country, he said: "We expect the first fleet to arrive with 70,000 tons of cargo and this will continue to ensure stability will continue to supply fuel to the country."

Ugandan cargo is handled through Kipwu Oil Terminal 2 (KOT2) and transported to Uganda through Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) facilities.
